Automation and technological upgrade of a wastewater treatment plant. Ville Saint-Gabriel is a small tourist municipality of 2800 residents, located in Lanaudiere, Quebec.
The project
The customer wants to implement a reliable system to prevent overflow of its wastewater treatment plant.
The challenge
- Establish reliable communication between systems without an Internet connection (too unstable in the region).
- Install an automated system to anticipate inflows and ensure 24/7 supervision of the plant.
- Avoiding service interruptions.
The solution
- The implementation of a cellular network to acquire data from nearby pumping stations.
- Automation of tributary control by means of motorized gates.
- The addition of a variable speed drive to manage the plant’s internal flow and ensure its consistency.
- Temporary bypass of equipment for the duration of the work to avoid service interruptions.
The result
The client can insure continuous supervision of the wastewater treatment plant, which allows him to monitor overflows and detect leaks at any time. In addition, it receives all alarms from the pumping stations at the treatment plant and can manage the flow of water remotely through motorized valves, without dispatching an employee to the site. The technological upgrade of the plant minimized the risk of overflow, made it more efficient and environmentally friendly, and reduced the number of staff required to operate it, all at a lower cost than a complete reconstruction. In the end, all the work was completed without any downtime. Ville Saint-Gabriel is pursuing the goal of extending the work to all of its stations.
